Each person has approximately 60,000 thoughts a day.

Every thought generates a biochemical response. Depending on the biochemical or combination of biochemical (neurotransmitters), emotions are generated. 

For example, epinephrine (adrenalin) is released when a person is feeling frustrated, angry or suffering other forms of stress. This leads to 

  • Sweating
  • Dilation of the pupils
  • Increase in blood flow to the skeletal muscles
  • A significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate

An increase in norepinephrine as a result of anger is characterised by:

  • The constriction of blood vessels
  • The contraction of heart muscles
  • The dilation of the lungs

During such an emotional state, the functionality of the part of the brain responsible for conscious awareness and creativity – the prefrontal cortex – drops. The power to make good decisions almost vanishes. 

Learn to pay attention your thoughts and feelings on a moment-by-moment basis as you go through the day. Invest an entire day doing this whether that be at work or at home. 

Then, practice at least 10 minutes of mindful meditation every day. Today, some of the greatest influential entrepreneurs practice mindfulness. Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington as well as Oprah swear by mindfulness. 

When the Jedi Master, Obi Wan Kenobi told his student, Annakin Skywalker to be mindful of his thoughts, he meant it. Following the advice would determine which side the student will fight for. 

Okay. Annakin who became Darth Vader was still influential!

But the point is that even then he knew the destructive power of untethered emotions. Influencers are aware of their most dominant emotions – positive and negative. They don’t allow either to overtake their decisions.
